AAM's Scott Paul on Leslie Marshall Radio Show, Dec. 29, 2013: Will Walmart follow through on its 'Made in USA' pledge?
Recently, Walmart CEO Bill Simon announced that the retail giant plans to source an additional $50 billion in U.S.-made products over the next 10 years.
Scott Paul, President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM), said Walmart’s announcement, if real, could be "a game changer."
According to Paul, the real question is whether Walmart will follow through, and whether this pledge of increased domestic sourcing will include higher-ticket items like appliances and apparel, and not simply more of the current paper goods and vegetables that are made in the U.S.
In an interview last night on the Leslie Marshall Radio Show, Paul explained that Walmart is simply responding to economics. Consumers want more made-in-USA choices, and smart observers recognize that this can be a profitable approach.
