Bill Moyers sits down with United Steelworkers International President Leo Gerard to discuss seeking economic justice for workers in the middle of an economic crisis and how he sees the future of American manufacturing. Gerard shares his thoughts on how unions will fare under the Obama administration, what kind of stimulus might be needed and what the future of American industry might look like.

I’m a college graduate who did not come from a union family. In fact, I worked most of my life for a Wall Street firm. Yet, I think it is bogus to blame the union worker for the ills of manufacturing. How can we abide by CEO’s and their senior staff making millions of dollars every year in salaries and perks; spending millions more on lobbying interests in order to sustain their “kingly” positions; and making costly irresponsible decisions with no recourse. In fact, the one thing that doesn’t suffer is their earnings even if the company loses money and the stock drops in half or more.
Greed and class insensitivity are ruling todays corporate capitalism and it must stop. Organized Labor isn’t as necessary as it was in 1910, but still necessary!
