Whither/Wither Manufacturing?

Posted by SCapozzola on October 3rd, 2008

According to the latest jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the U.S. manufacturing sector lost 51,000 jobs in September 2008.  That means a two-month loss of 107,000 good-paying factory jobs.

These aren’t the happiest of times, and, as the BLS report notes, overall U.S. employment fell by 159,000 jobs in September.

You’d think this was top of mind in the Palin-Biden show last night.  But a funny thing: the word “manufacturing” was never once uttered during last night’s Vice Presidential debate.  Similarly, “China” was only mentioned twice, and entirely in the context of coal and clean-air issues.

These are serious oversights.  Now more than ever, it’s critical that the candidates for President, Vice President, and Congress commit to an aggressive plan to stem the flow of manufacturing jobs overseas.
